Website Design and Development

To get the relationship on the right track and ensure you are completely aware of how we will work with you it is of paramount importance that our process is transparent.

From gathering initial information, to the design of your web site, the creation, coding and finally the maintenance to keep your web site current. Each component is of paramount importance.

The first step we take when working with you is to gather all relevant information (maybe some irrelevant too). Many things need to be considered when considering the design and approach of the look and feel of your website. It goes without saying that we will ask a lot of questions to help us understand your business and how that will relate to your website requirements.

Some of the things we need to consider are:

The Website Purpose

What will your website do? Provide information, blog, provide a service, sell a product? Is it a web application rather than a website?

Your Goals
What do you want to achieve with this web site? Make money or share information, sell products or raise awareness.

Target Demographic
Is there a specific group of people that you will be targeting? It is essential to re-create what we call your avatar or person you want to visit your web site. Together we will need to Consider their age, sex, interests. What do they do, where do they hang out, what do they read – this will enable us to design the correct approach for your website.

What kind of information will your avatar be looking for on your site? How is that best displayed? Written content, videos, images, charts, graphs or infographics.

Using the information we have learned so far, together we agree on a plan for your website.

At this point a site map is developed and agreed, this includes all main topic and sub topic areas of the site. The sitemap is essential and gives us a guide as to what content will be on the site. This approach is used and is essential in developing a consistent, easy to understand website navigation.

Finally during this phase a decision is made as to which technology will be used and implemented like a CMS (content management system)

Our favoured platforms are WordPress for a standard website or blog and Magento or Shopify for an e-commerce site.

Using everything we have learned so far we take everything into account to create the look and feel of your website. The target audience is one of the factors taken into consideration with design. A site aimed at a financial institution, for example, will look very different to a Yoga Studio or a School. At this stage, elements such as the company logo and brand guidelines / colour palettes are adhered to and integrated. This strengthens the identity of your company on your web site and creates consistency with your clients.

Once the prototype is designed, for all screen sizes – mobile, tablet, laptop and desktop (our design is mobile up rather than desktop down) you are given access which gives you the opportunity to express your likes and dislikes on the site design.

In this phase, honest communication is vital to ensure that the final web site will match your needs and that you are happy with it. We will work together, exchanging and discussing ideas until we arrive at the final design for the website.

This step is made up of two parts, the front end and the back end. Front-end development is the magic creation of HTML and CSS and the back end development is the programming or coding that runs on the server to allow integration with databases and a content management system, in our case – wordpress.

Websites developed by Online Edge are always compliant with the latest web standards and built according to best practice. This aspect is reinforced by user testing which can be done either by you, us or in conjunction.

Front end development includes adding all of the content to the website and page creation. Online Edge use the list of keywords produced earlier when planning the website SEO. This enables us to write unique page titles and descriptions. At this stage we will be able to suggest other improvements to your content which will improve the natural search engine ranking of your website.

It is now time to carry out user testing on your web site. We test the complete functionality of all the calls to action and forms, also for compatibility issues across all the main browsers (Internet Explorer, Google Chrome and Firefox) as well as the responsive views across smartphone, tablet, laptop and desktop (Apple, Android, Windows)

Once you have given your final approval and signed off, the site can be delivered. The files will either be uploaded to your server or we will create an environment within ours. Quick testing again completed as the site is now live and viewable.
